The "deep web"

WHAT IS IT?
The deep web is the other 94% of the world's electronically stored data and documents that are not accessible via popular search engines (i.e. Google).

  • The deep web includes:
  • premium subscriber-based online services (including limited edition publications that offer dissertations and local directories from around the world);
  • corporate Intranets and depositories;
  • specialized market research, private investigations, and other information broker services; and geo-spatial information services including commercial imagery from around the globe.

WHAT IS FEDERATED SEARCHING?
A key development in maximizing the value of the Internet, federated searching enables users to access many independent data sources and portals at the same time with one user interface and one search query, and then receive that data aggregated in one response. Common search engines only explore documents that are available for consumption by the masses; that is about 6% of the research and data that is stored electronically today. They cannot conduct a federated search; a search that collects and combines data from subscriber-based portals, Intranets, and other private web sites with information on public sites. Certainly, these individual sites can be searched one by one, and the information compiled and sorted by the user but that can be an unnecessarily tedious and costly process. The foremost tool for conducting a federated search is Explorit™ 4.0.

WHAT IS EXPLORIT™ 4.0?
Explorit is Deep Web Technologies' proprietary search software that saves individuals and organizations both time and money by launching a federated search of all relevant portals with one search query in one user interface. Explorit then delivers the query's results in a relevantly ranked order. Common search engines only return results based on the popularity of the sites surveyed -- a ranking of little use to serious researchers.

According to Abe Lederman, DWT's founder and president, the new version of Explorit - Explorit 4.0- was created in response to user request, as well as the company's own desire to continue to develop the most robust system possible. Users will immediately notice the new version now offers an enhanced interface to allow for the simple creation of custom applications for different groups of users. Explorit 4.0 also introduces new monitoring and management tools. Graphical-based tools monitor usage and the health of individual data sources. Further, tools have been added that allow for the management of the overall system, including reconfiguring the system for growth, better performance and dealing with failed hardware. Performance has been improved to better handle large numbers of information sources and user queries.

Imagine getting only 6% of your paycheck ... Or getting to eat only 6% of your dinner ... Would you find that acceptable?

You shouldn't be satisfied with only 6% of the data and information you need either.

Unfortunately, only 6% of the planet's electronically stored data and documents are available via common search engines such as Google - the other 94% are in the "deep web."

For an example of a federated search of the "deep web" visit www.Science.gov.
